Evia Beaches

Megali Ammos

Megali Ammos, near the town of Marmari is one of the most beautiful beaches in Evia and in Greece. Popular with wind surfers there is a kitesurfing club and a beach bar. It is usually windy here and there can be waves so it may not be for everyone but it is worth a visit at the very least. The ferry from Rafina goes to Marmari several times a day and there are lots of hotels, cafes and restaurants. The beach is about a 20 minute walk from the port but there are places to swim on the way there and beyond until the road ends at Zastani Beach. Yes there is a sewage treatment plant there but that is actually a good thing. The amphitheatrically styled Marmari Bay Hotel offers a view of the gulf of Marmari and its surrounding islands. The Evia Hotel and Suites is located on a hill right above the town of Marmari, with sweeping views of the sea and town. It features an outdoor pool, a poolside bar and beautiful gardens.

Kavos, North Evia

Kavos is a long pebble and sand beach with one part facing west and the other part facing south in the most northwestern part of Evia. There are restaurants, beach bars, sunbeds and umbrellas and a couple places to stay. This is where you can catch the boat to the Lichadonissia, Schelles of Greece, though once you get here you may be just as happy to stay.

Lichadonisia Beach

The islands of Lichadonisia in Northwestern Evia  have a couple small beaches with umbrellas and beach beds and a cafe and sea with colors you normally associate with the Carribean. You can get here by boat from Evia or from the resort town of Kamena Vourla on the mainland. It is known as the Greek Seychelles and in the summer it can get quite crowded and sometimes there may not be enough of the (free) beachbeds to go around. The boats come and go from Kavos every half hour and include a little tour oif the islands and your beach bed and umbrella. People who come in July and August say it's too crowded, especially on weekends so choose your time to visit wisely. Photo by Depositphotos.com

Chiliadou Beach

Chiliadou is a long stone and pebble beach on the north side of Mount Dirfi which can be reached by dirt road. With crystal clear waters, and a few beach bars with umbrellas and sunbeds its remoteness makes it popular for free camping and on the far left is a cove for nudists. The beach faces north so there can be waves during Meltemi.

Vasilikon Beach, Evia

Paralia Vasilikon is a long pebble beach in the northeastern part of Evia close to the inland village of Vasilikon and the port of Psaropouli where you can find rooms to rent, shops, restaurants and cafes. It can get windy and wavy here at times but when calm this is one of the better beaches on Evia and even in August you can get away from the crowds here because it is so long. Ag Nikolaos Evia

Agios Nikolaos is a small beach in the NE corner of Evia close to the town of Ellinika. Shallow so nice for families with small children but you will need to bring your own beach chairs and umbrellas but there are some trees for shade. There are a few places to eat nearby. There is a much longer beach called Magrika just to the east which is often empty (probably not in the summer). Both beaches face north so during Meltemi there will be wind and waves and whatever the two have brought with them. So go on a calm day if possible. There is another Ag Nikolaos that is a long beach in Edipsos. Photo by Depositphotos.com

Aidipsos, Evia

Loutra Edipsos has several beaches in and around the town famous for its hot springs. The most unique place to swim are the small beaches and flat areas in the south part of town where the hot springs create pools on the rocks and hot areas in the sea. There is a longer more typical beach right on the edge of town on the road going north to Agios Nikolaos. The place to stay is the Thermae Sylla Spa and Wellness Hotel which is right next to the hot spring beach. Also on the sea the Anemolia Studios is an 8-minute walk to the Edipsos Thermal Springs. The Glaros Studios on the other end of town is on the beach of Ag Nikolas. Photo by Depositphotos.com

Ilia Beach, Evia

Ilia is a small town between Edipsos and Rovies with a long pebble beach, clean seas and some umbrellas and beach beds but plenty of room for those who bring their own. There are tavernas, cafes and hotels pn or close to the town beach and on the other side of the small marina there is another beach for people who want to get away. There are rocks and sea urchins so if you are a watershoes type of person bring them. But that also means good snorkeling. Photo by Depositphotos.com

Limni, Evia

Limni is a coastal village in the northwestern part of the island between Chalkida, the main city of Euboea, and southeast of Edipsos. There are very nice pebble beaches in and on either side of town and lots more on the coast road. There are also hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops and makes an excellent base for exploring the area. Koukounaries Apartments are right on the beach in Limni as are the pet-friendly Alexiou Rooms. Katounia Beach, Evia

Katounia is one of several beaches south of Limni on the west side of Evia facing the mainland. Koxilia, Kioski and Galataki are other beaches along this coast and most are stone and pebbles with not much in the way of amenities once you get beyond Limni. There are one or two tavernas along the road and even a hotel though most people stay in Limni. Photo by Depositphotos.com

Pefki, Evia

Pefki in the far north of Evia faces Mount Pelion and the entrance to the Pagasetic Gulf. Like many beaches in Evia it is a mix of pebbles and gravel and the town that surrounds it is popular with tourists from the Balkans, with lots of places to eat, drink and sleep. The beach itself is long, gets deep quickly, and when it is windy and everything is stirred up does not appear as nice as others, but you can say this about any beach. Come on a calm day and you will probably love it. A nice place to base yourself for exploring northern Evia and there are a couple small ferries that connect Evia to Pelion and the mainland. Aplonio Pefki Evia is a 4-star condo hotel right on the beach. The 4 star Altamar Hotel is a 10 minute walk from the beach and has a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, a garden and a restaurant. You can find a large number of hotels and rooms on Booking.com's Pefki Page.

Amaranthos Evia

Amaranthos is a coastal town south of Eretria and facing the mainland. There are several long stretches of sand with restaurants and cafes and the area is popular with locals and Athenians who come for the day.

Rovies

Rovies is a coastal town between Edipsos and Limni with beaches in and on either end of town, restaurants, cafes, hotels and summer homes and like Limni a nice place to base yourself for exploring this end of Evia. There is also a campground here. The 2-star Agnadi Hotel has a garden, free private parking, a private beach area and a shared lounge, air-conditioned rooms with a private bathroom, balcony with sea views and free WiFi. The beachfront Heracles Guesthouse offers air-conditioned rooms with a patio with views of the garden. Photo by Depositphotos.com

Sarakiniko, Evia

Sarakiniko is a small beach in a sheltered cove that some have likened to paradise while complaining that getting there can be hell. You need a 4x4 but with a narrow road almost wide enough for a car you are better off walking there from Agia Anna which has a long pebble beach that faces the open sea, restaurants, cafes, beachbeds, umbrellas, hotels and camping. Eretria

Eretria is one of the easiest places to get to from Athens for an island swim. Just take the bus or your rental car or a taxi to the town of Oropos and the ferry goes back and forth all day long. There are lots of places to swim even right in town and with lots of places to eat and sleep it is as good a place to stay as any if you want to do some serious driving and explore the entire island. The Avantis Suites Hotel is a modern coastal resort, built on the southeast side of Eretria. Cozy, hospitable and family friendly it is literally situated on the blue waters edge of the South Gulf of Evia. Eretria has a nice little port area lined with cafes and fish tavernas, a nice town beach and several other hotels including the popular 5-Star luxury resort hotel Negroponte Resort Eretria and the 4-Star Eretria Village Resort and Conference Center, both of which are on the road to Halkida. There are also a number of smaller, less fancy hotels in town, all within walking distance of the beach, which can be found on Booking.com's Eretria Page.

Karystos

Karystos beach just outside of the port is nice enough but if you walk or drive a short distance west Galida Beach is long stretch of sea and sand with tamarisk trees for shade and a couple tavernas. A little further is Livadakia Beach which is in a cove and is more shallow and perfect for small children. Lots of hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops in Karystos which is a good place to go if you want to stay in a town that is not overrun by tourists even though it has everything tourists generally want. There is another beach in town called Psili Ammos which is sandy, clean and usually calm even with the north wind. There is a beach bar and for the price of a drink you can use their beachbeds and umbrellas and there is also room for you to bring your own. Continue along the coast and there are another half dozen beaches. The highly rated Anastasia Hotel and Suites is a 3-minute walk from the beach, has a pool and a sea-view restaurant that serves breakfast with homemade breads and organic products. For hotels in Karystos see Booking.com's Karystos Page. For more about Karystos see Southern Evia and the Joys of Karystos

Kymi beach

Paralia Kymi is the port where you catch the ferry to the island of Skyros and it has several beaches which are a mix of sand and pebbles that face east to the open sea and stretch for miles. The main town of Kymis is inland and between that and the port there are dozens of places to eat, drink and sleep in one of the more interesting undiscovered beach towns in Greece. Blue Dream Villa is just three Km from the port of Kimi, and three and half Km from the beach. In Kymi Town, Archontiko Kymis Boutique Hotel is a traditionally built property set among olive trees with elegantly appointed units that have Aegean Sea or mountain views from their balcony. There are several hotels in Kimi including the popular 3-star Kimi Palace Hotel and a number of other hotels which can be found on Booking.com's Kimi Page. There is a beach at Mourteri, and Oxilithos just outside of Kimi has a long sandy beach called Stomio with a 2-star hotel called the Hotel Stomio Beach on the small river which you can explore on paddleboats and kayaks.

Nea Styra

Nea Styra is a coastal town on the southwest coast of Evia with a small ferry that goes back and forth to the tiny port of Agia Marina in Attika close to Marathon and Schinias Beach. There is a big beach in the center odf town and some others on the outskirts. Nea Styra is another nice place to base yourself with restaurants, cafes, shops and hotels. The Venus Beach Hotel has a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden, free WiFi, a restaurant and a bar and provides airport transportation. For more hotels see Booking.com's Nea Styra Page

Thapsa

Thapsa is one of several remote beaches on the other side of Mount Dirfi that can be reached by 4x4 vehicles though some normal cars have made it there too. Whether they made it back I don't know. I suggest not taking a rental car and only use your own car if you are tired of it and don't like it anymore. There is a cafe-beach bar and it does get surprisingly crowded in the summer but it is a beautiful place.

Zarakon

Paralia Zarakon is a hole-in-the-wall beach that I stumbled upon while driving from Nea Styra back to Athens and turning off on a back road that said "beach". It was not a difficult drive and I was rewarded with a beaufiul beach, a small harbor, and a wonderful fish taverna O Kapatanios which had the freshest and most delicious fish I had eaten all summer.
