The beautiful traditional
sailboat Soultana is berthed in the port of Vourkari and can carry up to four passengers (plus the skipper) for
swimming trips in deserted beaches around Kea. She was built in 2002 on the
island of Lesvos by the old master boat builder Grigoris Grigoriou who came out
of retirement (he is over 80 years old) in order to make her. The boat is of an
exceedingly rare shape which originated in Asia Minor. The type of boat is known there as ‘peramataki’. The boat is also rigged with a tall lateen
sail. Though lateen sails were quite popular in the past, they are seldomly seen
nowadays. Sadly she sank in a storm in 2015.
